My name is Zekewos, and I am a Mission Coordinator with the Horn of Africa. I am single and work in the Kombolcha area of Wello, in the Amhara Regional State. I grew up in a family of believers, following Christ. Yet I had many spiritual inquiries.
I used to pray and ask God to give me answers to my many questions. I promised God that if he answered my questions, I would take them as confirmation that he loves me. He did, and I decided to follow Jesus 20 years ago.
Over five years ago, during a summer vacation after graduation, I attended a training event by Horn of Africa. This gave me an understanding of God’s eternal program. I became interested and wanted to be a participant in God’s global agenda. Actually, God had already spoken that he wanted me to be a missionary, but this time it came repeatedly and strongly. At first, I didn’t want to stay in my home area of Wello. However, I noticed it was God’s will for me to serve here and I obeyed.
Community Life in Wello
Wello has a mix of Orthodox Christians and Muslims, along with many cult-related beliefs. Witchcraft is practiced in almost every household, which is a challenge to spreading the Good News. Even if they have no problem accepting the Gospel message, they find it difficult to cut themselves off from their tradition. Witchcraft has a demonic influence that overwhelms the community.
Livelihood is mainly from farming crops such as teff and beans. Unfortunately, due to degraded land and soil, harvested crops hardly sustain families throughout the year. Therefore, many families also engage in trading clothing, cotton weavings, and cooking pots to help.
The Wello community has very few service facilities available, leaving them in poor health, lack of good education and poor land for growing crops.
Pray for Me
- Pray that God may send and provide for more workers.
- Pray God may release minds in the community to accept the Good News.
- Pray God’s power may be released in my life and ministry. I want God to use me.
